Leaving before 11 a.m. Friday or after 8 p.m. avoids the worst of it. Coming home Sunday instead of Monday afternoon does the same thing on the back end, and hotels are cheaper on that Sunday night than they are on Friday or Saturday.
Four Hundred Thousand Roadside Calls
AAA fielded more than 400,000 roadside assistance calls over Labor Day weekend last year, mostly flat tires, dead batteries and lockouts.
